My name is Caroline Pumphrey, and I am the Pharmacy Technician instructor. I teach anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. I also teach most of the insurance classes and the introduction to pharmacy classes.
To be successful as a Pharmacy Technician, and of course to enroll in Ayers, you must be a high school graduate or have a GED – one or the other – and for a Pharmacy Technician, we like to see someone strong in a mathematical background. We really try to structure how we place them in clinicals to where their strong points are and also what their likes are.
Ayers is a family, and we all really care about each other, all the employees. We really care about students. Even if it’s not something going on in my classroom, and a student has a problem in Math or in a different pharmacy practice, they know they can come to me! If it’s a chance something is going to keep you out of school, let’s talk about it. There’s always a solution, but sometimes they just need to talk – and they need someone they can talk to and trust. That’s what we’re here for, that’s our job and a lot of times, our job doesn’t just end at 1:30pm!
I’ve been here for 8 years and loved every second of it. The students are wonderful, and I get so much pleasure out of teaching. There’s just something about taking someone – not just a new grad from high school, but taking someone who’s even 60 years old who’s decided to go back to school – and they finally are able to reach for that dream that they’ve wanted and wanted and wanted, and helping them achieve it… You can’t beat that! It’s just amazing.
It’s that individual making that first step to get in, which is the scariest part; whether they are just graduating from high school or they’ve been out for 20 years, and they’ve raised their family and just want to go back to school, etc. Usually, it’s that first step to get them in. Once you take that first step to walk in the door, Ayers is a family and everyone here works as a team to help you through that program!
