Starting a Career in the Medical Field

…Without Going to Med School

You want a job that’s exciting and rewarding, and your heart is set on a career in the medical field. You’re in luck – this is a growing industry where you will find many career opportunities of all types and levels. Thankfully, there are positions that don’t require the same long-term schooling (or financial commitment) that med school does. Best of all, they can be just as rewarding!

Your options when breaking into the healthcare world are almost endless. There are plenty of workplace settings where you can focus your healthcare career. One great option is becoming a medical assistant.

What Does a Medical Assistant Do?

Most take on both clinical and administrative tasks. They tend to be the ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ in the medical world. On the clinical side, they’ll be checking vital signs, recording medical history, or assisting in the trauma room. On the administrative side, they help with things like scheduling appointments, or and assisting patient’s paperwork. Of course, the specific duties will depend on the healthcare facility.

So Where Do Medical Assistants Work?

The most common places to work as a medical assistant are doctor’s offices, urgent care caners, hospitals, or clinics. However, many find rewarding careers in unexpected places, such as chiropractor’s offices, nursing homes, assisted living communities, or medical labs.

Working in a doctor’s office, or urgent care center is usually less hectic than a hospital or emergency room. It also allows you to work in a specific field of medicine. But maybe working in a fast-paced setting is where your heart is. Working as a medical assistant in an ER is tough – just as any job in the ER is – but it is also very rewarding.
