High standards placed in Pharmacy Technician concerning a variety of practices

The National Community Pharmacist Association said its review of the recent fungal meningitis outbreak was due to unauthorized manufacturing of drug products rather than traditional pharmacy compounding. In a report on the fungal meningitis outbreak, the NCPA said compounding is an integral part of the pharmaceutical industry, especially for pharmacy technicians.

“Patients may receive compounded medications when they have a need for a customized medication, when a drug shortage or product discontinuation occurs, when the needed strength or dosage form is not available from a manufacturer, or when an allergen-free version of a medication is needed,” the NCPA said.

The NCPA said it believes patients of pharmacies should “continue to have access to high quality compounded medications that are not available from a manufacturer.”

Pharmacy Technicians Held to High Standards

Pharmacies and Pharmacy Technicians have high standards to ensure that quality compounding standards are met and that state board of pharmacy regulations is also followed. “Importantly, all practice settings and health professionals providing sterile compounding must follow quality standards,” the NCPA added. “Pharmacies and pharmacists may also be held to accreditation and certification requirements when compounding preparations to further ensure quality and compliance.”

The review of compounding practices is another example of the high standards the pharmaceutical industry places on its workers, whether they are licensed, pharmacists or pharmacy technicians.
